I'm Goin' for a Walk, Wanna Come?
48 Comments Published by Nancy on Monday, January 01, 2007 at 3:06 PM.
After all of the cream cheese talk here and here, it's time to get a bit more exercise. Somehow, my daily 30 minute walk had evolved into a 10 minute walk to the school and directly home.
So, I'm going on a walk and I am inviting you to come with me. The walk we will take is gonna be a long one.....we are going from Yorktown, Virginia to Florence, Oregon.
How long will this take, you ask? That depends on YOU! Since it is a virtual walk, the more of us who walk together, the quicker the trip will go.
To sign up, just add your name to the Mr. Linky and leave a comment.
Then, each Friday, return and enter your mileage for that week. Enter your week's mileage in the comments by 4 PM EST and I will add a comment with a link to a new post telling of our current location. (Note: All mileage entered after that time will be added onto the next week's total.)
FAQ's:
Can I run if I want to?
Yes. Knock yourself out! (Not literally, please.)
Can I bike?
Since bike mileage is so much greater than walking mileage, I would prefer not. Feel free, though to register and enter your own info into the study being conducted by Lawrence Berkeley Lab and you can leave us encouraging signposts along the way!
What if I don't know how far I've walked?
You can use Google Pedometer or Walk/Run/Jog. It plots your route on a map and will tell you how long that route is. If you register, you can even save the maps. Or, you can invest in an actual pedometer. Or, you can walk somewhere that has distances marked (like a track or a park with mileage markers) once and time yourself. Once you know how long it takes you to walk a mile, you can guess-timate your distance on other walks. The mileage police will not come to your door, but do the best you can to be accurate.
Is their a minimum amount I can report?
You can enter any amount, rounded to the nearest 1/4 mile. Personally, I will be aiming for 12 miles per week.
How long will this take?
Once I get a general idea of how many people are participating, I will set a goal date and report it to everyone in the group.

I'm in.
I'll link to this sometime today or tomorrow.
You'd better hold me accountable. I'm gonna shoot for 10 miles a week, I think. But first I need to measure how long my "path" is - I think it's about 2 miles, but I'm not sure.
I love that we're going to make the trip TOGETHER!! That will make it fun. We can chat along the way -- that always makes a walk go faster! :-)
Oh dear.
What am I getting myself into???
Best to start me out at a slow 5-mile-a-week pace...we'll see how that goes.
But here's the deal:
The big FIVE OH birthday is Saturday, so I won't be starting for real until after that.
Just be sure to hold me accountable as well! I can tend to fall off the wagon without a little kick in the hinder quarters every now and then!
OK...I bought a new pair of tennis shoes on Friday knowing that I needed to start walking...and then I stumble onto this opportunity!
Count me in. I'll take my first walk yet tonight... :)
Count me in. This will help me stay on track and focused. Goodness knows I need it. And my thighs will thank me later.
Oh lordy. I found this from boomama (where I lurk with pride). I've been looking for something to keep me motivated. For some reason, my super fit martial arts instructor husband just isn't cutting it. Gee, wonder why?
Here we go!
Howdy. Count me in. . .
Count me in. I'm keeping it low for now. I'm going to say 5 miles a week.
I'm in, too. Should be a fun trip; I look forward to it.
Hey, I clicked on your google link and I was taken to a page of MapMyRun.com which already had a very specific address typed onto the page. Could it be yours? Just thought you might want to check that and maybe change the link.
Great idea you have here!
I've been looking for a reason to get off my post-holiday rear end when His Singer called me over here. I'll start off with 5 miles a week and see if I can beat that.
Also, I thought those of you who live in the colder areas might want to know that Leslie Sansone has some walking tapes that measure out the distance for you while you walk INSIDE. She's got everything from a 1 mile easy workout to a 5 mile "I'm too old for this" workout. I'll be using those on days when it's all icy and icky outside.
I saw this over at boomama's and you can count me in. Put me down for 10 miles per week. This sounds like fun!
Great inspiration. I'm in like Flynn.
I'm a little sick to my stomach committing.... But, my stomach is out to there so I need to do something!
Now, where is that pedometer?
How fun is this?!! Not only will I be walking with my new ipod blasting great music, but I will be walking with friends.
I need this kind of accountability too...how much more fun to do this kind of thing with friends!!!Thanks! I came your way via BooMama!
Okay, okay, count me in. I'll shoot for 10 miles/week.
Oh I can't wait! I'm gonna shoot for 12 miles a week, I too need to measure my current path!
Walking with friends new and old is always sooo much more fun!
I'm in...maybe this will help my motivation!!
I walked my new route last night and you can count me in (for starters) at 8 miles per week.
And I decided that I will take the names of all the participants with me on the walk and use the time to pray for each one individually. A great way for me to stay focused and encouraged!
Thanks again for putting the invitation out there... :)
I think this is a great idea. I'm definitely going to try and join in. I haven't joined the "blogging world" yet (I'm so last century) so can't put a linky in, but hopefully you'll let me play along.
I'm in too! I started back on my health regimen this morning by walking/running 3 miles. Then I promptly went to a kids bithday party and had 3 slices of pizza and a slice of cake. Oh well, baby steps...
I'm up for the challenge. I better start with 5 miles per week also. (Yep, I am scared) haha
I like this...and I know my dogs will, too!
I'm in...this is a great idea! Thanks. Sorry I had to link twice...the first time I did didn't work. :-( I found you at Boomama's. I'm looking at 5 miles a week to start, working up from there. ~Mariah~
I'm in on this - I tried to go to the Google thing, got confused, so as long as I just come here once a week and log in how many miles on the pedometer - that I can do. If I need to do more than that, I'm in trouble. The walking will be the easy part, figuring out how to track, record, etc. baffles me a bit.
What a great idea! I may have to use the treadmill for some of it since I live in Ohio and the weather doesn't always cooperate this time of the year. What a fun way to exercise together!
I'm in. Let's start at 6 miles a week, although some weeks will be greater. I try to do a 5k every 6-8 weeks to keep me moving. Great idea! Thanks for letting us all participate.
I look forward to joining the fun!!!
This is perfect timing!
My dh just asked me-a couple days ago- to join him in walking each day. We'll get a measurement of our usual route and I'll report back here!
Thanks for organizing such a fun workout!
I'm walking 7 miles a week at the moment, but that will be increasing by the end of the month!
Wow, I'm really looking forward to some accountability. Hoping for about 10-12 miles per week. at least.
I'm reluctant to obligate, but know that I need to, so count me in.
A little extra motivation now and then would help too!
This is great! I've already made a personal goal to walk at least one mile a day or 7 miles a week.
I only got in 2 miles this week. I just started on Wednesday and am still recovering from the flu. My goal is going to be 7 miles a week.
This will make my husband very happy. It will keep me accountable ...
If I don't mention this walk sooner, it will be in my Thursday 13 #5 on jan 11.
Great idea! Thanks for plotting and planning.
5.5 profitable miles this week:)
I missed the 4 pm deadline, but I got in 10 miles this week.
Okay, as soon as I finish dusting off my treadmill, I'm in! What a wonderful idea! This may be just what I need to motivate myself to BEGIN getting into shape! Thank You!
Hey, this is Jeff from MapMyRun. What a cool idea that you have here!
You can now embed routes from MapMyRun directly into webpages and blog posts, which might be useful for you for this. You can check out more details here.
Click here to go to the Week 2 Check-in!
Is this where we're supposed to post mileage each Friday? I have 10 in this week.
I'm not a blogger but will be walking with you starting today...thanks for the motivation.. : -) I'll do 2 miles a day, at least.
I asked this last week--I'm such a dweeb--is this where we report our mileage? i did 14 this week.
WOW! I wish I was a walker! I would LOVE to be in on this. My feet don't cooperate though -- so I pedal. Pedal, pedal, pedal! Guess I'll have to look into that link you provided! THIS is such a GREAT idea though! I LOOOOOOOOVE it!
This is a cool idea, but it would be so much better if we could do it for a cause.
Perhaps Jeff from MapMyRun would be willing to make some kind of donation once we hit the goal?
I have no idea how much I can do per week - I am NOT an exerciser - but I do want to start walking just for the health of it and I even have an elliptical machine in my shed (it's coming inside tomorrow). When I do walk outside, my kids will be coming with me, so can we count our mileage all together? :)
I've been walking regularly since the middle of December. I'll be glad to add my miles to the total!
I walked all through my pregnancy, almost every day. But lately, I've been much too busy. I'm hoping to get back into it and this sounded like a fun way to do it!
